This is the same train station in Ridgewood, NJ where I took ‘The 7:45 From Hoboken‘ shot. This passageway runs under the three tracks to allow safe crossing from the trains to the parking lots. The Mission Style station was built around 1916 and is undergoing historic preservation which means that these murals most likely will be removed.
It’s not clear who put them there, but the spirit of the message and the animated figures on the opposite wall deserve historical preservation of their own. I emphasized the texture on the wall by hanging a flash from some electrical conduit and firing it with an on-camera remote. The flash had a warming gel on it to keep it from looking too cold when mixed with the sodium light that created some of the ambient, the rest was flourescent…a white balance nightmare, but conveying the feeling of this tunnel.
