Cattle Point Beach, originally uploaded by richard.haber.
What we did get were good pictures of the surf, good pictures of the sky and good pictures of the birds, just not all in the same capture. So what to do? Perhaps a true purist would have filed it away in the failure folder. What we did was to combine the successful elements of each capture into a single photograph that conveyed the feeling that we had of the scene at the moment. We used another piece of camera gear in our kit: Photoshop.
When we were done, however, there was still something wrong with the composition. The remaining foreground bird (we had cloned out the ‘noise’ birds) was flying out of the frame and we thought the picture would look better if it was flying in. So we ‘flipped the bird’ by selecting it as tightly as we could, rotating it horizontally and using blending modes and blend-if to finish it.
So now the photograph conveyed what we were seeing while there on the beach with the DLWS staff and participants. Is it a valid photograph? Is it cheating? Is it pretty? Please, you tell us…
